WWE looks like it’s finally bringing a big show back to the UK.

talkSPORT understands that hosting SummerSlam over here - on the 30th anniversary of the 1992 iteration - is in the works, but perhaps not at Wembley like most people would expect.

Cardiff’s Principality Stadium is in the running to hold next year's event and they’ve been exploring that venue for a number of months.

It’s believed the retractable roof is an attractive feature and while it can hold 74,500 people, there were 78,000 inside to see Anthony Joshua fight Carlos Takam in 2017, with the layout for boxing more closely linked to wrestling.

Sources tell talkSPORT that although it’s WWE’s preferred venue, nothing is final right now. It’s even possible that WWE will hold a stadium show in the UK that isn’t SummerSlam.

Either way, plans for a WWE pay-per-view in the UK are looking 'very positive' after last week.

It’s understood that WWE held meetings regarding the plans last week during their UK tour and Drew McIntyre was even a part of them.

WWE has not held a stadium show in the UK since SummerSlam 1992 where Bret Hart and the British Bulldog famously competed in the main event.

Sean Ross Sapp has already reported that WWE are planning 'eight nights of stadium shows' in 2022.

While that doesn’t necessarily mean there will be eight separate shows - WrestleMania 38 is slated to be two nights again - it means there is some room outside of the big four, five including Money in the Bank at the Allegiant Stadium.

WWE recently visited for a four-date tour of the UK and will return for more dates in November. NXT UK filmed their last tapings the week of SummerSlam in August and are set to do their next batch in early-October.

BT Sport has been lobbying to become NXT UK’s permanent home with the idea of welcoming fans back imminently.

talkSPORT understands those talks are ongoing and BT Sport are optimistic they’ll have fans in their studios for tapings eventually, but ‘logistics’ are still being worked out and it's not an easy deal to put together.

Naturally, with only two weeks or so until the next tapings, it might come too soon for fans to be in attendance.
