Buick was always just behind and managed 151 wins to come agonisingly close to lift the trophy as he mounted numerous challenges to catch Murphy.

The two jockeys had plenty of rides in the final week in the lead up to the finale on Saturday at Ascot.

On the finale day itself Buick was the only one of the two to win on board Creative Force.

But with 153 wins, Murphy had all but won it anyway and Buick needed a shock to win the crown.

Oisin Murphy's final week

Oisin had a full day without a ride after he failed a breathalyser test that saw him miss last Friday's promising rides, which put the champion title in jeopardy.

The reining champ was reportedly involved in a pub fracas before being ruled out on the day's rides.

Murphy admitted: "“The bottom line is I’ve been honest with everyone.

“I allow the jockeys’ championship and riding poorly to affect my personality. I need to deal with the bad days better and not turn to alcohol to delete those days. As a professional jockey, better is expected."

Hopefully, with this admission the champion can only get better as he continues to ride winners throughout.

Which jockey has won the most money?

Buick has actually enjoyed more success in bigger prize money races with the total prize money amounting to over £5million.

Murphy's prize money is just around the £4m mark, nearly a whole £1m less despite winning two more.

The two fought it out to the end valiantly, and finish the season with an impressive 22% and 21% strike rate respectively.
